Substitute School Van Driver 

The Substitute School Van Driver is responsible for safely transporting students in a school vehicle when regular transportation staff are unavailable or when additional transportation support is needed. Assignments may include transporting students between the San Francisco and Mountain View campuses, driving students to and from special excursions or field trips, transporting school materials between campuses, and assisting with other transportation-related needs as assigned. 

The Substitute School Van Driver is expected to operate school vehicles safely and responsibly, maintain a clean and safe vehicle, ensure the safety of students during transportation and loading/unloading, and comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and School procedures.

Assignments will vary based on the needs of the School and may be scheduled on an occasional, short-term, or as-needed basis. Assignments may include morning or afternoon student transportation, field trips, special events, or other transportation needs. Hours and schedules will vary and are not guaranteed. Assignments will often be on short notice. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Transport students in a safe, responsible, and friendly manner.
  • Operate school vehicles in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Conduct required vehicle inspections before use and report any mechanical issues or safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor. Do not operate an unsafe vehicle.
  • Arrive promptly for scheduled substitute assignments and follow assigned routes and instructions.
  • Follow route sheets, schedules, and other transportation instructions provided for each assignment.
  • Inform the supervisor promptly of any delays, changes, or transportation concerns.
  • Ensure school vehicles are clean and tidy before and after use.
  • Maintain appropriate supervision and control of student passengers while they are in the vehicle.
  • Drive safely and attentively, without music, and keep conversation with students to a minimum while driving.
  • Transport school materials or other items between campuses as assigned.
  • Check in with the appropriate campus office upon arrival and departure when required.
  • Be reachable during assigned work hours on a school-provided cell phone, which must not be used while driving.
  • Assist with serving and administering Hot Lunch at the Mountain View campus when specifically assigned.
  • Provide occasional clerical, facilities, or other school support when included in the substitute assignment.
  • Transfer school vehicles between campuses when needed.
  • Schedule or deliver school vehicles for routine maintenance or repairs when specifically assigned.
  • Complete additional driver safety training as required by the School.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or Head of School.
 

Experience and Qualifications:

  • CDL license preferred.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain, all valid applicable state licenses and other required certifications to operate company vehicles.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Previous experience transporting children or working in a school environment is preferred.
  • Must have a safe driving record and meet all School requirements for operating school vehicles.
  • Availability to accept occasional assignments based on School needs, including possible mornings, afternoons, evenings, or weekends.
 

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt (hourly)

Hours: Substitute/on-call; assignments vary based on School needs. No minimum number of hours is guaranteed.

Reports To: Head of Facilities and Transportation

Location: Mountain View and San Francisco 

Pay Scale: $28.00 - $34.00 per hour worked, depending on experience
